The development of nursing as a profession in the United States and Canada was greatly influenced by Isabel Hampton Robb who, while director of the nursing school at Johns Hopkins, led a number of efforts aimed at strengthening the profession. She was the first president of the Nurses Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada (the earliest national nursing organization) and was one of the first to recommend the adoption of standards in nursing education and registration. This popular and highly regarded textbook was written during her tenure at Johns Hopkins.
