This treatise still remains the most exhaustive and authoritative work on the umbilicus. Cullen's name is perpetuated eponymically in Cullen's sign, which is a bluish darkening of the skin around the umbilicus and is regarded as a sign of a ruptured tubal ectopic pregnancy with intraperitoneal hemorrhage.
