Kelly believed that it was important for the aspiring gynecologist to be well grounded in his or her knowledge of the anatomy of the abdominal cavity, as well as being thoroughly trained in abdominal surgery before practicing the specialty. Publication of this monograph clearly showed that Kelly was an expert in the anatomy and surgery of the abdomen. In this comprehensive treatise, he and Hurdon, a fellow gynecologist at Johns Hopkins University, cover every aspect of the normal and diseased appendix, as well as the many operative techniques that may be employed by the surgeon.
