ALFRED WALTER CAMPBELL (1868-1937) Histological studies on the localization of cerebral function. University Press 1905 xix, 360 p. illus., 29 plates. 30 cm.
Campbell’s labors as a neurophysiologist, neuro-anatomist, and practicing neurologist were much more extensive in scope and basic to future research than his limited writings would suggest. Several of the plates in this book are still being used in modern neurological texts to illustrate the fields of various histologic makeup of the cerebral cortex. Campbell worked mostly with human and lower primate brains, but did also use mammals of lower order. Some of his lasting clinical contributions are concerned with the histological changes in the brain in chronic alcoholism, and in the degenerative changes that may occur in the nervous system in herpes zoster.
