JOSEPH JOHN THOMSON (1856-1940) Rays of positive electricity and their application to chemical analyses. Longmans, Green 1913 vii, 132 pp., illus., 5 plates. 22.4 cm.
Thomson had already won the 1906 Nobel prize for his discovery of the electron when he discovered that positive ions in discharge tubes consisted of atomic and molecular particles which could be readily sorted. His find led directly to the discovery of non-radioactive isotopes and to the development of the new discipline of nuclear physics which has proven itself of vital importance in modern medicine.
