Die Frage der Laienanalyse ("The question of lay analysis") is an apology in support of allowing nonmedical individuals to practice psychoanalysis. Freud lays heavy stress on the fact that psychoanalysis is a branch of psychology and not medicine and that the education required of an analyst is independent of both fields. In the process, the reader is treated to a brilliant elucidation of the theory of psychoanalysis, couched in the expository prose for which Freud was noted.
