Following Gorgas' successful work in Cuba, he was ordered to Panama in 1904 where he was placed in charge of sanitation efforts for the Panama Canal. In spite of great difficulties he was successful in eradicating yellow fever, controlling malaria, and introducing a comprehensive and effective program to improve public health. He was accorded many international honors for his work, was elected president of the American Medical Association, and appointed Surgeon-General of the Army in 1914. In the present work he describes his work on the control of yellow fever and malaria, and covers the public health measures he instituted in Cuba and Panama.
