The present work was an instant success and was soon translated into several foreign languages. In it Mackenzie summarized the major aspects of his work using many reproductions of tracings of abnormal pulse waves to illustrate the various types of cardiac irregularities he described. It was in this work that he first described nodal arrhythmia now known as auricular fibrillation. Mackenzie's broadly based study of heart diseases, his polygraph and Einthoven's electrocardiograph (see No. 2231) were significant advancements in man's knowledge of the heart and prepared the way for a new era in cardiology.
