Becquerel, a French physicist, accidentally discovered the phenomenon of radioactivity in 1896, when he suffered a burn from carrying uranium in his pocket. In 1903 he shared the Nobel prize for physics with Marie (see No. 2261) and Pierre (see No. 2223) Curie, who were his pupils and friends and who were inspired by Becquerel's research in radioactivity.
