This handsome and erudite book by the famous English physiologist and histologist, written as a labor of love, is a delightful and informative source of biographical material, in brief form, of an imposing list of “greats” in the annals of the development of physiology. Vesalius, Servetus, Casserius, Harvey, Malpighi, Glisson, Willis, Boyle, Mayow, Haller, Hunter, Spallanzani, Lavoisier, Magendie, Müller, Baer, Pasteur and many others are included. With each biographical account there is a portrait from the original source, often with excerpts from those early physiologists and illustrations from their works.
