Chiari, a native of Vienna, served as an assistant to Rokitansky (see No. 1658 ff.) after receiving his medical degree in 1875. He later served as professor of pathological anatomy at Prague and, at the time of his death, was professor at Strasbourg. Among Chiari's achievements were an important study on gastric syphilis, a noteworthy history of pathology, and the first report on choriocarcinoma. The present work also appeared in the Denkschriften der Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Classe der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften and is concerned with changes to the brain in congenital hydrocephalus.
