Richer was one of a number of French neurologists who achieved prominence during their acquaintance with Charcot and the Salpêtrière. As the resident artist, Richer made numerous drawings and statues representing typical bodily and facial configurations of patients afflicted with various nervous and muscular diseases. This impressive work is an historical survey of medicine as portrayed in art and includes over 300 reproductions of paintings and woodcuts.
