ERNST ZIEGLER (1849-1905) A text-book of pathological anatomy and pathogenesis. William Wood 1887 xxvii, 1091 pp., 289 illus. 23.3 cm.

One of the foremost pathologists of his day, Ziegler studied medicine at Bern and Würzburg where he completed his degree in 1872. He became assistant at the pathological institute, then after graduation took a similar position at Freiburg where he advanced to professor. In 1881 Ziegler became professor of pathological anatomy and general pathology at Zurich. The following year he accepted a similar professorship at Tübingen and 1889 went to Freiburg. Ziegler was a prolific writer and contributor to the journal literature and also founded the Beiträge zur pathologischen Anatomie. Ziegler first published Lehrbuch der allgemeinen und speciellen pathologischen Anatomie und Pathogenese in two volumes at Jena in 1881-1882. It was to go through eleven editions and was translated into English, French, and German. A comprehensive work, it gained great popularity as a text and may still be read with profit by pathologists today. This first English translation is published here in one volume for the first time. The translation, made from the first four German editions with Ziegler's consent, was initially published in England in 1882, 1884, and 1886. The translator was Sir Donald MacAlister (1854-1934), a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and physician to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
