OTTO BUETSCHLI (1848-1920) Studien über die ersten Entwicklungsvorgänge der Eizelle, de Zelltheilung und die Conjugation der Infusorien. Christian Winter 1876 vi, 250 pp., 15 plates (1 fold.), each plate preceded by a leaf with descriptive letterpress, illus. 26.5 cm.
Bütschli, a native of Frankfurt am Main, studied mineralogy, chemistry, and zoology at Karlsruhe, Heidelberg, and Leipzig. He taught at Kiel and Karlsruhe but in 1878 moved to Heidelberg where he taught and did research until his retirement in 1918. Bütschli was a leading cytological researcher, carried out important investigations into the protozoa, and made key studies of the evolution of invertebrates. He helped establish the fluid nature of protoplasm and also investigated the anatomy and structure of nematodes. In the present work, Bütschli reports on his identification of the stages of nuclear division in several different types of animal cells and their sequential arrangement. The fifteen plates are ample evidence of his expertise because all of his observations were made without the benefit of biological stains. The book first appeared in Volume X of the Abhandlungen der Senckenbergischen naturforschenden Gesellschaft and is here issued as a monograph for the first time.
