Gowers' ability as a clinician, investigator, and teacher of the physiology and pathology of the nervous system was respected on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Fortunate were the students who could be instructed in brain pathology by his carefully crafted lectures. These eighteen lectures were given at University College Hospital where Gowers was then serving as assistant professor of clinical medicine. An individual of many and varied interests, Gowers was not always popular with his contemporaries; however, no one failed to honor his many contributions, his keen mind, and his great ability to explain complex matters in concise terms.
