Senn was chief surgeon in the Navy during the Spanish-American War and was founder of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States. He also served as surgeon-general of the National Guard in both Wisconsin and Illinois. Senn made a number of important contributions on battlefield first aid as well as the conservative management of gunshot wounds. This popular, comprehensive text on surgery incorporating his military experiences, went through four editions, and was translated into Russian in 1903.
