Pepper was a commanding figure in the evolution of American medical education. In his role as provost at the University of Pennsylvania he helped establish a standard of excellence in the training of medical students which was far ahead of its time. Among his many papers is included the first description of hyperplastic bone marrow in pernicious anemia. As editor of the present work, Pepper drew from some of the most distinguished practitioners of his day, including Sir William Osler and John Shaw Billings.
