With Quincke's approval, Hoppe-Seyler undertook a major revision of the first edition of their text and this second edition appeared in Quincke's seventieth year. Hoppe-Seyler made a number of changes based on new discoveries and increased knowledge gained through research. He added material on the effects of tuberculosis and syphilis on the liver and included fourteen plates depicting various pathological conditions.
