GERHARD HENRIK ARMAUER HANSEN (1841-1912) On the etiology of leprosy. (In British and foreign medico-chirurgical review. Vol. 55 (1875), pp. 459-489.) 20.9 cm.

Hansen, a Norwegian, became interested in leprosy after joining the staff of the Leprosy Hospital in Bergen, which specialized in treating leprosy. As a result, he devoted most of his professional life to the study of the epidemiology, etiology, prevention, and management of leprosy. His discovery and demonstration of the leprosy bacillus in the early 1880s is one of the earliest reports of pathogenic bacteria. He first reported his work in the Norsk magazin for laegevidenskaben in 1874. The present paper in English appeared the next year as the only original communication in the April issue of the British and foreign medico-chirurgical review.
