Prosper Menière (1799-1862) gave the first summary description of vertigo in 1860 and Charcot (see No. 1918 ff.) completed his description in 1874. Hitzig was interested in the neurological aspects of the condition and observed it clinically as well as experimentally. In the present work he reports on the pathological causes of vertigo, its diagnosis, and therapy. Hitzig's work appears here for the first time in Part II of Volume XII of Nothnagel's Specielle Pathologie und Therapie.
