Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 2011

MORIZ KAPOSI (1837-1902) Handatlas der Hautkrankheiten für Studirende und Ärzte. W. Braumüller 1898-1900 Vol. I: [8] pp., 114 col. plates with facing pages; Vol. II: [6] pp., 126 col. plates with facing pages; Vol. III: xiii [3] pp., 136 col. plates with facing pages. 25.4 cm.

Kaposi was born in Hungary, the son of very poor parents. Nevertheless, he eventually was able to study medicine and received his medical degree from Vienna. He was immediately appointed assistant to Ferdinand von Hebra (1816-1880), the noted Austrian dermatologist. He later married Hebra's daughter and, after Hebra's death, assumed his father-in-law's chair at the University, becoming an eminent dermatologist in his own right. Kaposi was a prolific writer and made a number of original contributions to clinical dermatology. His Pathologie und Therapie der Hautkrankheiten is more than ample evidence that he was a master of dermatology from the clinical, pathological, and therapeutic aspects. The present atlas of skin diseases, with its 376 color plates, is one of the most extensive and valuable collections of illustrations in the dermatological literature.
