Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1973

(1832-1846) Dictionnaire de médecine, ou, Répertoire général des sciences médicales. Béchet jne 1832-1846 2nd ed. 20.3 cm.

Jacques Raige-Delorme (1795-1887), who wrote the preface to this large, comprehensive dictionary, commented that it was intended to be much more like an encyclopedia than a dictionary. It contains a wide variety of general medical topics arranged in alphabetical order with the contributor's name following each entry. Some of the entries are short, while others are lengthy disquisitions followed by detailed bibliographies. The many contributors were among the leading medical figures of France during the first half of the nineteenth century and include such noteworthy individuals as Béclard, Breschet, Cazenave, J. Cloquet, Itard, Marjolin, Orfila, Pelletier, Reynaud, Roux, Trousseau, and Velpeau. The dictionary was first published at Paris from 1821 to 1828 and has here been revised and expanded to incorporate many new subjects.

Gift of John Martin, M.D.
