Flower was an English comparative anatomist and surgeon with particular authority on the primate brain. He served as an assistant surgeon in the Army Medical Service during the Crimean war, but retired in 1855 due to poor health. In 1857 he joined the staff at the Middlesex Hospital as a Demonstrator in Anatomy. During his time at Middlesex, he held a variety of positions from assistant-surgeon to curator of the anatomical museum. In 1884 he was appointed as director of the Natural History Museum in London.
