WILHELM HIS (1831-1904) Die Häute und Höhlen des Körpers. Schweighauserische Universitäts-Buchdruckerei 1865 34 pp. 28.5 cm.
His, a prodigious Swiss scientist, pioneered in the fields of embryology, histology, tissue origins, and anthropology. He not only developed the Basle nomina anatomica (see No. 1970), but he also founded the Anatomical Gesellschaft, the Archiv für Anthropologie, and the Zeitschrift für Anatomie und Entwicklungsgeschichte. In the present work, His put forth the basic concepts of tissue embryology. Using serial sections and three-dimensional models to illustrate his theories, he showed that the serous spaces in the embryo are mesodermal in origin and that they are lined by the special layer which he was the first to term endothelial.
