JULIAN JOHN CHISOLM (1830-1903) A manual of military surgery, for the use of surgeons in the Confederate Army. West & Johnston 1861 xi, 447 pp. 18.1 cm.
When the Civil War began, the Confederate Army was without any manual for the medical care of its soldiers, and this work was especially written to fill that need. It concerns itself with principles in the care of surgical emergencies, but is almost unbelievably primitive compared with modern military medicine. There is an interesting letter pasted to the front flyleaf, from George Benet, "a partially reconstructed rebel" of Columbia, South Carolina, to Dr. Elliott Cutler, who once owned this copy.
Gift of John Martin, M.D.
