The six essays in the present work "touch on matters concerning the mutual relation of physician and patient, but are meant to interest and instruct the laity rather than the medical attendant" (Introductory, p. 5). Mitchell's practice included significant numbers of women suffering from nervous diseases and certain of the essays were intended to provide them with advice and counsel. The essays include: The physician, convalescence, pain and its consequences, moral management of sick or invalid children, nervousness and its influence on character, and out-door and camp-life for women.
