JEAN HENRY DUNANT (1828-1910) Un souvenir de Solferino. Imprimerie Jules-Guillaume Fick 1862 115 pp., col. map. 26.9 cm.
Dunant, a Swiss philanthropist, was appalled at the lack of medical care for the wounded at the battle between French and Austrian forces at Solferino in 1859. His efforts in organizing an emergency medical service and the subsequent publication of this work, in which he describes the conditions at the battle, prompted the eventual acceptance of the Geneva Convention in 1863 and the formation of the International Red Cross. In 1901, Dunant, together with the French politician and economist Frédéric Passy (1822-1912), became the first recipient of the Nobel peace prize.
