LIONEL SMITH BEALE (1828-1906) Disease germs; their supposed nature: an original investigation, with critical remarks. J. Churchill and Sons 1870 ix, 85 pp., 4 plates (part col.). 19.4 cm.
In this work, based on lectures he delivered at Oxford in 1868 and 1869, Beale anticipated by five years the microbe theory of disease and the concept of immunization as proposed by Pasteur. A brilliant microscopist, Beale introduced a number of important staining techniques and was the first to fix tissues for examination by injection. He also wrote several works on the microscope and did much to demonstrate its value as a diagnostic tool in clinical medicine.
