This manual of psychological medicine (first published in London in 1858), written with John Charles Bucknill (1817-1897), was the first of the modern textbooks in this field. It is divided into four parts entitled “The Intellect”, “The Emotions”, “The Will”, and “The Influence of the Mind Upon the Body in the Cure of Disease”. Tuke came from a family of Quakers that were activists for better treatment of the mentally ill. The family operated The Retreat (also known as the York Retreat), a home for the insane and mentally ill in the county of York in England.
