Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 192

EURICIUS CORDUS (1486-1535) Ain Regiment: wie man sich vor der newen Plage, der Englische Schwaiss genannt, bewaren. n. publ. 1529] [8] ll. 19.2 cm.

The sudor anglicus, or English sickness, is here given one of its earliest descriptions by Cordus (also known as Heinrich Urban), first professor of medicine at the University of Marburg. This disease probably appeared for the first time in 1485, in England, and several severe epidemics during the next century claimed thousands of lives. It was probably, according to clinical descriptions, a virulent form of influenza.
