EDWARD HAMILTON (1824-1899) The flora homoeopathica. Wm. Headland 1852 Vol. I: xxxiv [2] 300 pp., 36 col. plates; Vol. II: [4] 223 [2] pp., 30 col. plates. 25 cm.
Hamilton, physician to the London Homoeopathic Hospital, prepared this work to show opponents of homeopathy that homeopathic medicines varied little from those used by the allopathic or traditional physician and also to provide a source of therapeutic information for fellow homeopaths. The many lithographs, in brilliant color, were executed by Henry Sowerby (1825-1891) and his sister, Charlotte (fl. 1850). The Sowerby family were celebrated natural history illustrators of their day. Common and foreign names, synonyms, general and special characteristics, history, uses, mode of preparation, poisonous effects, and antidotes for each of the sixty-six plants are all discussed in the generous textual material.
