Kussmaul was professor of medicine in various universities throughout Germany before finally settling in Strasbourg. He wrote with authority on many subjects including psychology, physiological chemistry, pathology, and neurology, and developed a number of valuable diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. This work on speech pathology, in particular his description of aphasia, is perhaps his most important contribution.
