After completing his basic work in physiological acoustics, Helmholtz published this treatise to explain the role in hearing played by the ossicles of the middle ear. It is here that he describes the anterior ligament of the malleus--Helmholtz's ligament--for the first time. The treatise initially appeared in Pflüger's Archiv für Physiologie.
