Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1878

GEORGE PARKINSON (fl. 1860) On the application of vulcanized India rubber for making artificial palates. J. Churchill 1860 20 pp., col. plate. 20 cm.

The refinement of dental and oral surgery is, for the most part, the work of American surgeons. Goodyear, in 1855, first showed the practical application of molded, vulcanized rubber (vulcanite) for correcting oral defects after removal of bony structures within the oral cavity. In this small treatise, Parkinson, an English surgeon, anatomist, and dentist, accounts his successful results of the treatment of eleven patients with defects of the hard palate, using vulcanite prostheses.

Gift of John Martin, M.D.
