MAX VON PETTENKOFER (1818-1901) Ueber Cholera mit Berücksichtigung der jüngsten Choleraepidemie in Hamburg. J. F. Lehmann 1892 39 pp. 25.1 cm.

For more information on this author or work, see number: 1871

Pettenkofer developed his Boden theory (see No. 1871) through careful study and analysis and steadfastly clung to his conclusions in spite of other evidence to the contrary. So strong was his belief that drinking water could not transmit the disease that he drank a culture of cholera bacilli and suffered no worse symptoms than a mild diarrhea. His dramatic self-experiment is described in the present work. This paper first appeared in the Münchener Medicinische Wochenschrift and has here been published as an offprint in the series Münchener medicinische Abhandlungen.
