In 1866 Erichsen published six lectures on infrequently-seen injuries to the nervous system that occurred as a result of railroad accidents. The work was well received, was translated into German, and published in the United States in 1867. Erichsen included those six lectures in this book and added eight additional ones. He expanded the scope to a wider range of subjects and placed more emphasis on the legal implications of these injuries.
