The chief work contained in this volume is Bigelow's Manual of orthopedic surgery (Boston, 1845). It won the Boylston Prize in 1844 for the best answer to the question: "In what cases, and to what extent, is the division of muscles, tendons, or other parts, proper for the relief of deformity or lameness" (p. 3)? In addition to the preceding work, eighteen other medical and surgical papers by Bigelow are included.
