Bigelow, professor of surgery at Harvard and a pioneer in orthopedic surgery, was the first American to perform a hip joint excision. He is perhaps best remembered for his discussion of the importance of the ilio-femoral ligament (Bigelow's ligament) in the reduction of hip dislocations by the flexion method, as described in this work.
