Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 186

-1480 Mensa philosophica. Imprimebant haeredes Francisci Scnelboltzii, typis haeredum Beyeri 1603 [24] 526 pp. 12.6 cm.

This popular and well-known book has been attributed to Michael Scot (see No. 84) and Theobaldus Anguilbertus (fl. 1500), but the authorship is not certain. First published at Cologne in 1480, it appeared in eight more editions before 1500 and several more during the sixteenth century. Its medical importance lies in the fact that much of the book is devoted to matters concerning various foods, wine, and the diet as well as hygiene. The book also contains Ottmar Luscinius' (1487-1537) Joci ac sales mire festivi ("Wondrously festive jokes and witticisms").
