The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1858

FRANCISCUS CORNELIS DONDERS (1818-1889) On the anomalies of accommodation and refraction of the eye. New Sydenham Society 1864 Translated from the author's manuscript by William Daniel Moore. xvii [1] 635 pp., illus. 21.4 cm.

Probably the greatest Dutch physician of the nineteenth century and one of the finest ophthalmologists of any era, Donders was professor on the Utrecht faculty from 1848 until his death. Of his many works on the physiology and pathology of the eye, this is no doubt his finest achievement. Written in Dutch but first published in English, it contains a number of fundamental discoveries and observations on astigmatism, refraction error, and causes of strabismus and the action of the ciliary muscles. "As a contributor to physiological optics, this book ranks with the labors of Helmholtz" (Fielding H. Garrison, An introduction to the history of medicine. 4th ed. Philadelphia, 1929. p. 610).
