Edited by Tiberius von Györy (1869-1938), professor of the history of medicine at Budapest, this volume of Semmelweis' collected works was undertaken to settle the question of priority in recognizing the etiology of puerperal fever. The volume contains his most important work (see No. 1851), the open letters (see No. 1852), his doctoral dissertation on the life of plants, as well as his other writings on puerperal fever and gynecological subjects. In addition, the volume contains works by Ferdinand von Hebra (1816-1880), Charles Henry Felix Routh (1822-1909), Karl Haller (1809-1887), and ≤koda (see No. 1676) who were among Semmelweis' earliest supporters.
