This first American edition of Hassall's noteworthy work was edited by Henry Vanarsdale (fl. 1850), a New York physician. Volume II contains seventy-nine numbered plates, most of which are in color. As in the London edition of 1849, plates VIII, XVII, and XXXVIII were omitted. However, this edition contains ten additional plates drawn especially for the book, which depict additional specimens from the muscles, gastrointestinal and lymphatic systems.
