Chase’s first career was as a travelling peddler selling groceries and home-made remedies. In 1856 he began auditing medical classes at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He published his first pamphlet of recipes in 1856. In 1857 he was granted the title of doctor from the Eclectic Medical Institute in Cincinnati. Between 1858 and 1863 Chase’s book grew to contain over 800 recipes and came to be known as Dr. Chase’s Recipes, or Information for Everybody.
