The present work was published at London in two parts while West was lecturer in midwifery at St. Bartholomew's Hospital. The first part, consisting of twenty lectures, appeared in 1856 and the second, of twelve, in 1858. West decided to publish the first part separately because he felt that students and young practitioners were in great need of the information and promised to publish the second part within three years of the first. The work appeared in the United States in 1857 and both parts were published in this single volume the following year.
