Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1824

SIR JOHN TOMES (1815-1895) A course of lectures on dental physiology and surgery. J. W. Parker 1848 xii, 397 pp., illus. 21.9 cm.

The raising of the status of English dentistry from a trade to a science was largely the result of the efforts of Sir John Tomes who secured the passage of the Dental Act of 1878 providing for the mandatory education and registration of dentists. Before his reform efforts, Tomes, a surgeon, had already gained a considerable reputation through his studies of the bones and teeth and the publication of the present work, a series of lectures originally delivered at the Middlesex Hospital School of Medicine. The book covers tooth development, anatomy and pathology of the teeth, and periodontal structures and includes an account of the early use of anesthesia in dentistry. This is a presentation copy, inscribed by the author.
