The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1816

SIR JAMES PAGET (1814-1899) Studies of old case-books. Longmans, Green 1891 ix [3] 168 pp. 22.3 cm.

For more information on this author or work, see number: 1815

In this warm and personal account of his experiences over more than forty years, Paget demonstrates clearly the value that well-maintained clinical records can have for later study and reflection. To Paget they emphasized how far medical science had advanced during his lifetime. Lister's introduction of antiseptic surgery, improved nursing care, new suture materials, better instruments, and a more thorough understanding of pathological processes, were some of the changes he observed during his lifetime. Among the many astute observations Paget includes is a description of the complications of diabetes mellitus, which compares well with today's knowledge of that disease.
