Becquerel was an active practitioner and diagnostician and a member of the Medical Faculty of Paris as well as head physician at St. Perrine Hospital. His father, Antoine César Becquerel, was one of the founders of electrochemistry and pioneered in the field of electrolysis. This study of the alteration of urine composition in various diseases is the younger Becquerel's first work.
