Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1809
ALFRED STILLE (1813-1900) National dispensatory. Henry C. Lea 1879 viii, 1628, 32 pp., illus. 23.2 cm.
Stillé, professor of the theory and practice of medicine and of clinical medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and Maisch, professor of materia medica and botany at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, have here collaborated in this popular dispensatory which eventually went through five editions. This first edition sold so rapidly that a second edition had to be printed the same year and a reprint issued in 1880. Unlike its chief rival, the United States dispensatory, Stillé and Maisch included "for the first time in a Dispensatory, a succinct account of the physiological action of medicines" (Preface, pp. iv-v) as well as a therapeutic index which served as "a therapeutical classification of medicines, and it is believed must greatly enhance by its suggestiveness the working value of the book to the practitioner" (Preface, p. v).
