For more information on this author or work, see number: 1804

Sims began the present work during the summer of 1863 while in Baden Baden attending the Empress Eugénie. After moving from Paris to London in 1864, Sims began publishing his notes in Lancet and they appeared in regular installments for nearly a year. When the book finally appeared at London in 1866, it created immediate controversy because many critics felt it was too casual and treated some subjects much too frankly. Nevertheless, it was recognized that Sims was bold in his presentation, offered new and constructive suggestions, and provided many illustrative case histories. Although the work did have defects and omissions, it contained a great deal of practical information and remained the standard work on the subject until Thomas Addis Emmet's Principles and practice of gynaecology (see No. 1951) was published in 1879.
