Lebert, a native of Breslau, Poland, initially studied at Berlin and received his medical degree from Zurich in 1834. He later served as professor of medicine at Zurich and from 1859 to 1874 was principal professor of medicine at Breslau. Lebert is credited with being the first individual to accurately describe an abscess of the brain in 1856. In addition to his research on bone diseases, he made many microscopic studies of tumors and the mechanism of inflammation which are reported on in the present work. The University of Iowa Libraries' copy is wanting the atlas which contains twenty-two leaves of plates.
